Here in the high desert, using and reusing our water in the most efficient ways possible is even more important than in other climates. Although the water from our showers and laundry was being directed to trees and other plants, we felt that we were missing an opportunity to use this water in the most effective way.
We were thrilled to welcome Nik Bertulis to teach a Greywater workshop here in September, and help us build a system that uses this water more efficiently. From his 10 plus years of experimenting and implementing greywater systems, he helped us design a system that integrated the shower and bath house into one greywater garden that begins with a small wetlands. We harvested some riparian plants from the spring up canyon for the mini wetlands, and planted the rest of the garden with comfrey, mint, and greens for the rabbits.
